LTB 235/24 – Launch of New Dog Awareness Customer Postcard and Ordering Process

No: 235/24

Dear Colleagues,

Launch of New Dog Awareness Customer Postcard and Ordering Process

Further to discussions with Royal Mail and joint input via the RMG/CWU National Joint Dog Awareness Working Group, an updated customers’ dog awareness postcard has been designed, developed jointly and launched this week ahead of dog awareness week 1 – 7 July 2024.

With a 15% increase in attacks this year and the year before there is more to do and influencing customer behaviours is intrinsic to this.

The Dear Customer postcard we currently have in Royal Mail is a great tool that can be used proactively to ask dog owners/customers for their support in taking some simple steps to bring about a positive change.

The customer postcard has now been refreshed/revised, aimed at making the messaging resonate with the dog owner as much as possible. The review consensus was less words and more personal.

The aim of the postcard is to appeal to the dog owners’ sense of responsibility and the care they have for their dog and to give them another reason to follow the advice from Royal Mail and the Unions – it will protect postal workers and it will protect them and their dogs.

The second aim is to give the card a dual purpose and rather than customers reading it and discarding it, the new version provides them with something they can stick in their door or window, notifying any callers and anyone delivering to the address, that they have a dog and may take a few minutes or so to answer the door.

Benefits include:

  1. It saves the postcard being discarded!

  2. It makes the tips visible to the customer each time they go to the door.

  3. It gives them the confidence that the person knocking knows to wait whilst they secure their dog.

  4. It lets postmen and women know there is a dog at the property and to wait whilst the customer secures it.

The cards are now available to order by Unit managers.

The cards can be delivered to customers to make them aware of the risks that Royal Mail and Parcelforce delivery workforce face with dogs and the simple steps they can take to keep their dog secure.

These cards are a great way of asking for our customers’ support in keeping both postal workers and their dog safe and the cards can be delivered to any address, at any time, to help raise awareness about dog risks to postmen and women.

There is a space on the card for the duty holder to add their name, if they so wish, to personalise them (this is optional) and the customer can use the reverse side of the new postcard to notify/display to anyone delivering to their address that they have a dog.

Not only does this alert people that a dog is present, it also gives the customer added confidence that anyone delivering is aware and will give them time to secure their dog and put it away before opening the door to collect and/or sign for mail, packets and parcels etc.
